Vol. 417 No. 9

Written Answers. - UCC Funding.

Bernard Allen

Question:

178 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Education the steps he proposes to take to reverse the trend in the situation whereby Government grants to University College, Cork have been slashed from 80 per cent of their overall budget to just over 50 per cent since the early eighties while income from tuition fees has been doubled to help bridge the gap, and his views on whether this is a grave imposition on parents who do not qualify for third level grants.

The position stated in the question in relation to the percentage State contribution to the overall budget of University College, Cork is not correct.

As regards levels of fee income, proposals under the new funding mechanism for the universities will cap fee income at 31.7 per cent of the overall budget which is the current average level for the sector as a whole.
