Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

185 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education if he will clarify the reason for the non-acceptance by many third level higher education institutes of the alternative mathematics programmes at leaving certificate level to be taken in June 1992.

The development of the alternative mathematics syllabus was in the context of consideration of how best to cater at senior cycle for low-achieving pupils who sat for the intermediate examination in 1990.

The present position with regard to the alternative syllabus is that it is accepted for matriculation purposes or as satisfying the minimum entry requirement for admission to courses as appropriate. It does not, however, satisfy the entry requirements for courses where mathematics is specified as an essential subject for a particular course. The third level authorities are the people best qualified to decide the entry requirements to any of their courses having regard to the nature and content of those courses.
In the circular sent to the schools in 1990 announcing this new option pupils who intended to take the option and who intended to proceed to third level study after the leaving certificate were advised to check the status of the syllabus in relation to admission to the institutions of their choice and to the courses available therein.
