Vol. 417 No. 9

Written Answers. - PE Teachers Status.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

201 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education the reason he continues to discriminate against the teaching of physical education in the regional technical colleges and the Dublin Institute of Technology by refusing to recognise the teaching of higher level students as being third level work for the purpose of the promotion of the few existing college teachers remaining in these colleges; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Physical education teachers in the regional technical colleges and the Dublin Institute of Technology are not, in general, teaching courses leading to educational/vocational qualifications. They cannot therefore be regarded as doing third level work and accordingly the question of their upgrading does not arise.
