Vol. 417 No. 9

Written Answers. - Medical Indemnity Insurance.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

215 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Health if he intends to oblige therapists and practitioners of complementary medicine to have valid policies of professional indemnity insurance; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

All medical practitioners employed in the public health service are obliged to insure themselves against claims for medical negligence or malpractice. Other categories of staff engaged in the public health service are insured under their employer's indemnity insurance. However, therapists and practitioners of complementary medicine are not employed in the public health service.

Indemnity insurance for practitioners engaged in private practice is a matter for themselves.
