Vol. 417 No. 9

Written Answers. - Cardiac Surgery Services.

Peter Barry

Question:

218 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Health if he will give details of, (a) the number of patients waiting for heart related operations in the Southern Health Board region and (b) the average length of time they are waiting; and when it is anticipated the waiting list will be eliminated.

Cardiac surgery services in the Southern Health Board area are provided at Cork Regional Hospital. There are 45 patients on the waiting list for cardiac surgery at Cork Regional Hospital at present. The average waiting time is 8-10 weeks.

Provision has been made in the Southern Health Board's financial allocation for 1992 for the appointment of a second cardiac surgeon at the hospital.
