Vol. 417 No. 9

Written Answers. - Hernia Operation Appointment.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

234 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for Health the reason two admission dates promised to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 6 for a painful hernia repair operation have fallen through at St. James's Hospital, Dublin 8; and if he will confirm that the operation will now go ahead without further delay.

The treatment and admission of a patient to hospital is a matter for the consultant concerned. I understand from the hospital authorities that this patient is on the routine waiting list.

The Deputy will appreciate that waiting lists are kept under review and urgent cases are accorded priority over routine cases. I understand that this patient will be admitted to hospital in the very near future.

Should the patient consider that his condition has deteriorated and that an urgent appointment is warranted, he should contact his general practitioner with a view to expediting an appointment with the consultant.
