Vol. 417 No. 9

Written Answers. - Wearing of Helmets by Cyclists.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

244 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for the Environment if he intends introducing regulations to render compulsory the wearing of helmets for cyclists; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Bernard Allen

Question:

253 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of the risks to young cyclists, he has any proposals to introduce the scheme whereby the purchase of cycle helmets could be promoted and subsidised.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 244 ad 253 together.

I refer to the reply to Question No. 75 of 7 May 1991. I have no proposal to subsidise the purchase of helmets.
