Vol. 417 No. 9

Written Answers. - Cork Dumping Site.

Bernard Allen

Question:

245 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make special funds available to Cork Corporation to close and relocate the dump at South Douglas Road, Cork.

The management and development, including site selection, of landfill sites is principally a matter for the local authorities concerned. Grants of up to 50 per cent are available from my Department to local authorities towards the capital cost of providing co-disposal facilities, which could cater for industrial as well as domestic wastes. Grants amounting to £415,000 have been paid to Cork Corporation is recent years in respect of the development of co-disposal facilities at the South Douglas Road site. No application for other funding has been made by Cork Corporation but any such application would have to be considered in the light of the amounts already paid to the corporation.
