Vol. 417 No. 9

Written Answers. - County Cork Redundancies.

Pearse Wyse

Question:

333 Mr. Wyse asked the Minister for Labour the number of people made redundant in Cork city and county that were notified to his Department in 1990 and 1991.

Statistics of notified redundancies giving a breakdown between Cork city and county are not available in my Department as such statistics are recorded on a county basis only. The number of redundancies notified in County Cork—which includes Cork city — in 1990 was 1,863 and in 1991 was 2,309.

It must be stressed that the figures given for the two years in question relate to notifications of proposed redundancies under the redundancy payments Acts and not to actual redundancies. They do not, therefore, include certain categories of employees which do not come within the scope of the redundancy payments Acts, for example, employees with less than two years eligible service with an employer, employees who are under 16 years of age or employees who have reached the qualifying age for old age pension. On the other hand, the statistics may also include cases where redundancies are proposed but are not in the event implemented.
