Vol. 417 No. 9

Written Answers. - Education Green Paper.

Dick Spring

Question:

17 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Education if he proposes to include any provisions in the Green Paper dealing with special education; if, in particular, he will recognise the distinction between first, second and third level education as it might apply to people with a mental handicap; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Arising out of a recommendation of the Primary Education Review Body, a special committee chaired by Mr. Declan Brennan, former Secretary of the Department, was set up last year to report and make recommendations on the educational provision for children with special needs, including those with mental handicap. It is expected to report within the next few months.

I will be referring generally to the issues involved in the Green Paper and will include specific provisions in the White Paper which will take account of the recommendations of the special committee.
