Question:

27 Mr. Kavanagh asked the Minister for Education the number of teachers who retired at first and second level in each of the past three years; the number in each case that retired on disability grounds; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The number of pensions awarded to teachers who retired under the various categories in the past three years is as follows:

Primary Teachers.

Compulsory	66	54	61
Voluntary	117	135	153
Disability	48	80	70

A total of 374 teachers retired under the special voluntary redundancy/early retirement scheme in 1988.

Secondary, Community and Comprehensive Teachers.

Year	1989	1990	1991
Compulsory	49	53	52
Voluntary	47	54	50
Disability	30	32	42

A total of 183 teachers retired under the special voluntary redundancy/early retirement scheme.

The provision of information relating to vocational teachers is a matter for the Department of the Environment.
