Vol. 417 No. 9

Written Answers. - Education Facilities for Disabled.

Mervyn Taylor

Question:

89 Mr. Taylor asked the Minister for Education if he will outline his plans to improve access facilities and learning programmes in the further education service for people with disabilities and/or learning difficulties; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is the policy of the Department of Education to provide in all new and recently refurbished educational buildings, access facilities for people with disabilities. In the case of existing buildings, every effort is made by my Department to ensure that all requests for improved access are met.

Third level colleges are encouraged by my Department to facilitate people with disabilities and/or learning difficulties, including those with vision or hearing impairments, in so far as it is possible within the resources available to them. The arrangements made in each case are a matter for the authorities of the institution concerned.
