Vol. 417 No. 9

Written Answers. - Toy Industry Monitoring.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

105 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he intends to set up a system of regular monitoring of the toy industry in the State at the level of, (a) retailer, (b) importer, (c) manufacturer, and (d) supplier; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The European Communities (Safety of Toys) Regulations, 1990 (S.I. No. 32 of 1990) transpose into Irish Law Council Directive 88/338/EEC on the approximation of the laws of the member states concerning the safety of toys. The regulations prohibit the placing of toys on the market unless they are safe and apply not only to the manufacturer or importer of toys into the Community but to anyone who supplies toys.

Responsibility for the enforcement of the regulations lies with the Director of Consumer Affairs who is independent in the exercise of his functions.

In accordance with the regulations, the director carries out regular monitoring of the market.
