Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Defence Forces Postings.

Andrew Boylan

Question:

22 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for Defence if his attention has been drawn to the current practice within the Defence Forces relating to postings; and if he has satisfied himself with such practices.

Michael Creed

Question:

77 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Defence if his attention has been drawn to the current practice within the Defence Forces relating to postings; and if he has satisfied himself with such practices.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 22 and 77 together.

Under the provisions of Defence Force regulations the posting of personnel of the Defence Forces is a matter for the appropriate military authority. I am not aware of any problem in this regard.

Is the Minister aware that in the first few months of this year there have been transfers between Kerry and Dublin, Galway and Athlone and from Donegal? Officers were posted on a permanent basis, with notice verying from less than 24 hours to 48 hours. No consideration was given to the families concerned. Does the Minister believe this type of activity is conducive to good relations within the Army?

I know the Army Command is both competent and humane and I am very surprised at what the Deputy is telling me. I have invited the Deputy already to let me know about individual instances.
