Vol. 418 No. 1

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - UN Mission to Iraq.

P. J. Sheehan

Question:

25 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for Defence if Irish Army personnel will participate in UN teams in Iraq who are due to go there to destroy several factories making parts for the Scud ballistic missile.

Phil Hogan

Question:

36 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Defence whether Irish Army personnel will participate in UN teams in Iraq who are due to go there to destroy several factories making parts for the Scud ballistic missile.

Louis J. Belton

Question:

45 Mr. Belton asked the Minister for Defence if Irish Army personnel will participate in UN teams in Iraq who are due to go there to destroy several factories making parts for the Scud ballistic missile.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 25, 36 and 45 together.

No request has been received for Irish Army personnel to participate in any such teams.

If such a request is made, will the Minister be prepared to respond positively? Are military personnel from outside the State being trained in the ordnance school for bomb disposal work?

There is an ordinary bomb disposal service, as the Deputy will know, having visited the Border area recently. I cannot answer the hypothetical question, but if a request comes in it will be considered in the usual way.
