Written Answers. - Defence Forces Telephone Costs.

Toddy O'Sullivan

Question:

49 Mr. T. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Defence if he will outline the amount spent on telephone charges by the Defence Forces in 1990 and 1991; and the reason for the variance.

The amounts spent in 1990 and 1991 on telephone charges in respect of the Defence Forces were: 1990, £2.3 million; 1991. £2.8 million.

The variance is accounted for by (a) the applications of VAT to telephone charges with effect from 1 January 1991; (b) changes in the billing system from quarterly to monthly accounts; and (c) minor variations in telephone traffic.
