Vol. 418 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Subsidy.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

114 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the subsidy per capita which, (a) fee-paying and (b) non-fee paying schools receive; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

115 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education if all fee paying schools receive a capitation grant from his Department; if he will give details of the amount of the capitation allowance; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 114 and 115 together.

Catholic fee-charging secondary schools are not eligible for any grants from the Department other than teacher's salaries.

A per capita grant of £150 is paid to Catholic secondary schools in the free education scheme in respect of all recognised pupils in addition to teachers salaries.

A block grant is paid to the secondary education committee each year in respect of Protestant secondary schools based, pro-rata, on the grant to Catholic schools. This grant amounted to £2,301.00 in the 1991 financial year. In addition teachers salaries are paid in respect of these schools.

Vocational educational committees and community/comprehensive schools are given a cash allocation rather than a per capita grant.
