Vol. 418 No. 1

Written Answers. - Remedial Teachers.

Jim Higgins

Question:

119 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Education the number of remedial posts, if any, which have been appointed among the posts created as a result of the reduction in the pupil/teacher ratio at second level from 20 to 1 to 19.5 to 1.

Jim Higgins

Question:

120 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the number of remedial teachers who were appointed to second level schools under the first allocation of 60 posts for disadvantaged areas in the year 1990-91 and under the second allocation of a further 60 posts for the year 1991-92.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 119 and 120 together.

Schools were advised that the additional posts sanctioned for disadvantaged areas could be used for a variety of purposes including providing remedial help to children and developing home/school liaison. In addition, my Departments psychologists visited the schools in question to advise on the use of these additional posts.

In the case of additional posts provided under the pupil/teacher improvements, schools were free to allocate the posts to the best advantage of the school.
