Vol. 418 No. 4

Written Answers. - County Cork New Second Level School.

Gerry O'Sullivan

Question:

112 Mr. G. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Education whether there have been any developments in the provision of a second level school in the Riverstown-Glanmire area of County Cork, in view of the rapid growth and development in this particular area and the fact that a large number of students have to be transported to other schools outside the catchment area each day.

Bernard Allen

Question:

113 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Education when he will sanction a second level school for the Riverstown-Glanmire area in County Cork.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 112 and 113 together.

The question of the provision of a new second level school in the Riverstown-Glanmire area of County Cork has been kept under review in my Department. The most recent review revealed that the provision of a new second level school in the area is not warranted at present. However, my Department will continue to monitor the situation in the light of the most up-to-date statistics available on demographic trends, housing developments and primary school enrolments.

I would point out that revised arrangements were put in place in January 1991 to include the post-primary schools in Midleton as designated schools for transport purposes, for the Riverstown-Glanmire pupils.
