Vol. 418 No. 4

Written Answers. - Cork Regional Hospital Management.

Bernard Allen

Question:

142 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if he will introduce legislation to allow University College Cork a more influential role in the running of Cork Regional Hospital, especially in view of the situation where University College Cork is finding it difficult to fill the Chair of Medicine in UCC's Medical School.

The general question of the appropriate arrangements for the management of public hospitals is being considered at present in the context of the preparation of legislation on organisational structures and accountability in the health services. A consultation process is taking place and I will be submitting proposals to the Government in the coming months with a view to bringing legislation before the Oireachtas in the autumn.

The filling of university posts is primarily a matter for the colleges concerned.
