Vol. 418 No. 4

Written Answers. - Inland Fisheries Development.

Monica Barnes

Question:

33 Mrs. Barnes asked the Minister for the Marine if each of the regional fishery boards has submitted an inland fishery development plan to his Department; and if so, if he will outline the details of such proposals and the funding being provided in 1992 by his Department to develop inland fisheries as a resource for job creation, tourism and environmental protection.

Each regional fishery board as part of the annual Estimates process submits detailed spending proposals for the Central Fisheries Board of my Department. These proposals relate to all the costs and programmes of the boards, ranging from salaries, overheads and conservation, protection and development activities.

All these activities underpin the inland fisheries resource as an amenity and tourist attraction, which supports employment creation and enhances environmental protection.

The total allocation being provided by my Department for 1992 for inland fisheries is £7,590,000. Most of this provision, i.e. £6,368,600, has been allocated to the fisheries boards to meet the costs involved in providing a protection, conservation and development service for inland fisheries.
