Vol. 418 No. 4

Written Answers. - Island Development.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

51 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for the Marine whether he supports an integrated approach in relation to our islands from the point of view of the installation of infrastructure and the development of their tourism, industrial and agricultural industries; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

An integrated approach to overall development of our inhabited islands is desirable and this has been recognised and pursued by Governments down through the years. While a number of Departments, State agencies and local authorities have separate roles and functions in relation to islands, there is, in practice, close co-ordination between these bodies so as to ensure the most consistent and effective approach.

In this context my own Department provide, on an agency basis, advice and other engineering services relating to marine works required on islands and the particular needs of islands are taken into account in the implementation of fisheries policies.

As indicated in a reply to a recent parliamentary question, the question of re-establishing the ministerial committee on islands development is under consideration.
