Vol. 418 No. 4

Written Answers. - Uninsured Motor Vehicle Numbers.

Ivor Callely

Question:

103 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice if he will give details of the Garda Síochána calculations on the number of uninsured motor vehicles on the road; and if he will give a breakdown between (a) motor cars and (b) motorbikes of the number of prosecutions for no insurance for each of the years 1989 to 1991.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that they carried out a motor vehicle insurance survey in April 1991, and that at present the data collected are being analysed by the Environmental Research Unit of the Department of the Environment. A report will be published shortly.

The number of persons prosecuted for not having insurance is as follows: 1989 — 35,926; 1990 — 29,213.

The information is not yet available for 1991. No breakdown is maintained for the different categories of vehicles involved.
