Vol. 419 No. 3

Written Answers. - Blanchardstown (Dublin) Garda Numbers.

Tomás MacGiolla

Question:

18 Tomás Mac Giolla asked the Minister for Justice if he will upgrade the Garda station at Blanchardstown, Dublin 15, to district status, increase the number of gardaí in the area and agree that a drugs unit be located at the station; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Garda authorities inform me that the current manpower at Blanchardstown station is 60. Blanchardstown station forms part of the Cabra District and there are no proposals to change its status.

The Garda authorities also inform me that the Gardaí based at Blanchardstown are supported by the Divisional Task Force and, in dealing with drugs offences, the Drugs Unit from Harcourt Square. They consider that this arrangement is adequate to deal with any suspected breaches of the law in relation to drugs. It should be remembered that, in addition to the specalised Drugs Unit, a large number of Garda have received training in drug-related crime. The local Garda Officers in Blanchardstown report that while there are no indications that there is a serious drugs problem in the area, they are continuing to be vigilant to ensure that this does not change for the worse and all necessary action will be taken in any case coming to light.
