Question:

67 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if in respect of each of the last three years, she will outline the total number of trans-atlantic flights departing from Shannon which originated in Dublin.

The information sought by the Deputy is as follows: 1989, 1,027; 1990, 1,113; 1991, 1,049.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

68 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if any applications for direct trans-atlantic flights to Dublin have been made in the last three years; and if so, if she will outline, (a) by whom they were made, (b) when and (c) the outcome in each case.

Since 1989, contact has been made with a number of North American carriers about the possibility of their operating direct services to Ireland. To date, only one foreign carrier has made a firm proposal in that regard. Earlier this year, Delta Airlines proposed that, in the event of the Government deciding to eliminate the Shannon stop policy, they would commence a New York/Dublin service. This would be in addition to their existing service which operates Atlanta/Shannon/Dublin.

My predecessor also received proposals from Aer Lingus in 1991 seeking approval to operate services between Ireland and Los Angeles, on the basis of a direct service to/from Dublin, and also for the operation of some direct services between Dublin and New York.

I am assessing the approaches from both Delta Airlines and Aer Lingus in the context of proposals on the Shannon stop, which I will be formulating shortly for consideration by the Government.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

69 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if she will give details of foreign airline carriers operating a trans-atlantic service out of Shannon airport for each of the years 1979 to 1992, inclusive.

The information as requested by the Deputy is set out in the following tabular statement:—
