Vol. 419 No. 3

Written Answers. - Employment Schemes.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

84 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Labour if employment schemes not administered by FÁS are likely to be operated within the terms of the revised Programme for Economic and Social Progress for the remainder of the year, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The major employment scheme is the social employment scheme. Expenditure on the scheme in 1992 is projected at £72.9 million compared with £68.943 million in 1991. The allocation of funding between individual projects is a day to day matter for FÁS.

The Taoiseach announced last week a series of special measures to assist the long term unemployed in the 12 pilot areas currently covered by the area-based strategy provided for in the Programme for Economic and Social Progress. In this regard, the new community employment development programme will replace the social employment scheme in the 12 pilot areas on a gradual basis over the next year.
