Vol. 419 No. 5

Written Answers. - Social Housing.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

178 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment the total cost to the central Exchequer to date of the Government's plan for social housing; the number of housing units provided; the cost, if any, to the local authorities; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The following table indicates the total expenditure by source on the Plan for Social Housing (including the local authority and voluntary housing programmes and house purchase and improvement loans schemes) in 1991 and the provisions for 1992. Because implementation of the Plan is devolved to local authorities, expenditure figures for 1992 to date are not available in my Department.

In regard to progress generally under the plan, I refer to my statement of 1 May last opening the Second Stage debate in this House on the Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill, 1992, which sets out, in overall terms, policy and progress in regard to meeting social housing needs.
