234 Mr. Ryan asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will investigate the decision taken by the Eastern Health Board to refuse payment of supplementary welfare allowance to a spouse and children of a bank official (details supplied) in County Dublin who was involved in the recent dispute with a view to making the payment which is justified in the circumstances.

Under the provisions of the supplementary welfare allowance scheme dependants of strikers, but not strikers themselves, may receive assistance. The Eastern Health Board, which is responsible for the administration of the supplementary welfare allowance scheme in the Dublin area, has advised that a payment was made to the person in question and her dependent children, arising from her spouse's involvement in the recent banks' dispute.

No further payments were made by the board to this recipient as the next date of payment coincided with the end of the banks' dispute. In the circumstances of the return to work, the board took the view that no further assistance was warranted.
