Vol. 419 No. 5

Written Answers. - Lough Derg.

Michael O'Kennedy

Question:

108 Mr. O'Kennedy asked the Minister for Finance if he is prepared to grant special status to the Lough Derg region of the Lower Shannon by way of tax incentive schemes for investment in order to develop the lake and its environs as a major tourism resource.

The introduction of a new tax incentive as proposed in the question would run contrary to the Government's policy, as announced in the Programme for Government, of curtailing the vast range of exemptions, shelters, allowances and concessionary tax rates. However, it is not clear that such special tax treatment is needed for this area given that significant development is already being undertaken in the Lough Derg area with European Regional Development Fund assistance aimed at developing tourism resources.
