Vol. 419 No. 5

Written Answers. - Celtic Fortification.

John Connor

Question:

111 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for Finance if he will confirm the discovery of an ancient Celtic fortification at Turrymount Hill, Castlerea, County Roscommon; and if he will outline the archaeological significance of this find.

The Archaeological Survey of County Roscommon currently being carried out by the Office of Public Works has discovered a previously unknown hillfort of late Bronze Age/early Iron Age at the summit of Turrymount Hill. While the discovery of the remains of a hillfort is intrinsically important, this is one of a number which have come to light in Connaught in recent years as a result of the Archaeological Survey.
