Vol. 419 No. 9

Written Answers. - Defence Forces non-Combat Activities.

Madeleine Taylor-Quinn

Question:

65 Mrs. Taylor-Quinn asked the Minister for Defence if he will prepare a report on the various ways in which the Defence Forces could earn income from non-combat activities within the present structures, using the varied skill and expertise within the forces.

In practical terms, existing operational demands would preclude the Defence Forces from participating in commercial ventures. It is not part of Defence policy to divert resources of the Defence Forces from the uses for which they are intended.

Requests, however, are received from time to time for military assistance and, when it is provided, costs are recouped to my Department where it is considered appropriate.
