Vol. 420 No. 1

Written Answers. - Fish Imports.

Liam Kavanagh

Question:

25 Mr. Kavanagh asked the Minister for the Marine if he will outline the amount of fish imported into this country in 1989, 1990 and 1991; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The following are the amounts of fish imported into this country, by value and volume, for each of the three years requested:

1989

1990

1991

Value/£m

39.6

52.7

52.2

Volume/000 Tonnes

26.9

43.0

34.9

Over half of all fish imports consists of herring and mackerel, much of which is caught by Irish boats and landed into ports in Britain and Northern Ireland, and imported for processing and subsequent re-export. The level of these imports can vary significantly from year to year.
Irish exports of fish were valued at about £175 million in 1991. Comparison of the figure for imports with that for exports shows a very healthy balance of trade, of the order of £125 million.
