Vol. 420 No. 1

Written Answers. - Fishing Boats' Tonnage.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

41 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for the Marine whether he has yet made a policy decision on permitting a tradeoff between tonnage and horsepower in fishing boats so that extra tonnage will be accepted in lieu of a shortfall of horse power, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that some fishermen, wishing to comply with the current 100 per cent capacity replacement policy applicable to sea fishing boat licensing, can experience difficulties in locating the precise tonnage and horsepower needed to facilitate the licensing of a boat. This has sometimes led to situations where fishermen, who have acquired more than the tonnage required may still face a shortfall in relation to horsepower.

I am having this problem examined as a matter of urgency to see whether a limited system of trade-offs between tonnage and horsepower could be introduced to relieve the present difficulties, as I am concerned that current policy should not impose unnecessary burdens on fishermen. I hope to be in position to make a statement on this matter in the near future.
