Vol. 420 No. 1

Written Answers. - Dublin Port.

Ivan Yates

Question:

44 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Marine when it is envisaged that the Dublin Port and Docks Board will be in a position to license the new stevedoring units in the port, arising out of the liquidations of Dublin Cargo Handling Ltd; if he will personally intervene to ensure that there is a negotiated settlement to this as opposed to a prolonged dispute which would ensure the continued closure of the port; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am advised by the Dublin Port and Docks Board that negotiations are at an advanced stage to license a number of new stevedoring operators to provide cargo handling services in the deep sea sector of Dublin Port following the liquidation of Dublin Cargo Handling Ltd. The Board anticipates that the new service will be operational by early June next.

A liquidator has been appointed by the High Court to wind up the operations of Dublin Cargo Handling Ltd. and the dock labour force has been made redundant.

I am anxious to ensure that the deep sea sector of Dublin Port is re-opened as quickly as possible, that a viable and cost efficient port service is provided by the new operators and that recruitment of staff to operate the new cargo handling service is expedited.
I am keeping in close touch with the situation and will do all I can to ensure that these objectives are met.
