Vol. 420 No. 4

Written Answers. - Davitt College (Mayo).

Enda Kenny

Question:

132 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Education if he will confirm that his Department issued written approval on 21 June 1991 for additional accommodation at Davitt College, Castlebar Vocational School, which accommodation would be provided by way of a low cost masonry type building; if he will further confirm whether, in view of County Mayo vocational education committee having followed and concurred with departmental criteria regarding such approval a recommendation for contract appointment has been submitted to his Department; the reason no funding has yet been provided for such contract; if, taking into account the completely inadequate facilities at this vocational school in view of the attendance of over 700 pupils, he will now confirm that moneys will be made available to commence and complete the approved accommodation out of the 1993 capital programme for school buildings; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Approval was conveyed to the VEC on 21 June 1991 for an extension to Davitt College to be provided by way of a low-cost masonry type building.

Tenders have been obtained by the VEC for the project and a report and recommendation on these have been submitted to my Department.

As with all capital projects the placing of a contract is dependent on the availability of capital resources and these are currently very limited because of the many other commitments which have to be met. In the circumstances, I am not in a position at present to say when the project will proceed. I will ensure, however, that it is considered for inclusion in the building programme at the earliest opportunity.
