My Department makes financial provision for the employment of teachers, child care assistants, clerk-typists and caretakers by the Boards of Management of special schools for the mentally handicapped. Other personnel may be employed by these schools with financial support from organisations such as the Eastern Health Board, FÁS and Voluntary Groups.
My Department's financial allociation provides for the employment at present of 139 full-time teachers, 13 part-time teachers, 10 child care assistants, 5 clerk-typists and 3 caretakers in 12 special schools for mentally handicapped children in the Dublin area.
The total enrolment for these schools, based on September 1991 figures is 1,513 pupils.
The current cost of providing this service, excluding building costs, is approximately £3.1 million.
