Vol. 420 No. 6

Written Answers. - RTÉ Advertising Costs.

Peter Barry

Question:

108 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if she has received complaints from Irish industrialists that the effect of the recent Broadcasting Act has been to increase the cost of RTÉ advertising so that Irish firms are finding it impossible to compete with international companies and that this in turn has led to unemployment in advertising firms; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

In my ongoing review of broadcasting legislation, to which I have referred previously on a number of occasions in the House, I have met representatives of various sectors. The difficulties being caused by the operation of section 3 of the Broadcasting Act, 1990 have been pointed out to me by those affected in the course of these meetings.

I realise the urgent need to remedy the problems being caused by the operation of section 3 of the 1990 Act. I hope to conclude my review and to bring a comprehensive set of proposals to Government in the autumn and to introduce legislation shortly thereafter.
