Vol. 420 No. 6

Written Answers. - Medical Appliance Provision.

Dick Spring

Question:

118 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Health the plans, if any, his Department have to implement policies which would facilitate the obtaining of wheelchairs and other such medical appliances by people who have been waiting for them for a long time; and if he will provide a timetable for the implementation of these policies.

I am aware that difficulties can arise from time to time in relation to the supply of wheelchairs and other appliances. I am at present finalising the establishment of a review group to make recommendations for the expansion and improvement of services for people with a physical disability within the framework of the commitments in relation to the physically disabled contained in the Programme for Economic and Social Progress. Procedures in relation to provision of wheelchairs and other appliances will be considered in that context. I will be asking the review group to report as a matter of urgency.
