Vol. 420 No. 6

Written Answers. - Wallenberg Case.

Dick Spring

Question:

160 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the action, if any, he plans to take, or has taken, towards securing the release of a person (details supplied); and if he will provide a timetable of the commencement of this action.

The Government continues to take an active interest in establishing the fate of Raoul Wallenberg.

Since September, 1991, a Swedish/ Soviet (now Russian) Joint Commission has been investigating the case. The Commission's work is proceeding in a co-operative atmosphere. Considerable archive material has been provided by relevant Ministeries and security agencies in Moscow and is currently being researched.

Given the ongoing work of the Joint Commission, I do not feel that specific intervention on my part at this stage is called for. The matter is, however, being kept under close and active review.
