Vol. 420 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Departmental Legislative Programme.

Jim Higgins

Question:

6 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Taoiseach if he will give details in respect of his Department of (a) the legislation promised in the Oireachtas since 1989 and (b) the legislation introduced to the Oireachtas; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Since 1989, my Department have brought only the Temple Bar Area Renewal and Development Act, 1991, through the Oireachtas. Work continues on the preparation of the following Bills which have been promised in the Oireachtas: 1. The National Heritage Council Bill has been drafted on the basis of the council's proposals. The text was circulated to Departments. A final consideration in the light of those observations is underway; 2. The drafting of the National Monuments (Amendment) Bill has been completed and will shortly be considered by the Attorney General prior to submission to Government; and 3. Statistics Bill — the draft text is not yet completed. Further consideration is required before submission to Government.

Work is proceeding as quickly as possible on the legislation, in tandem with the administrative functions of my Department. There are substantial and complex issues to be addressed in this programme. I hope to introduce the legislation as soon as possible, consistent of course with proper consideration and consultation.
