Vol. 420 No. 6

Written Answers. - Telecom Éireann Inspector.

Dick Spring

Question:

21 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in the light of recent reports that the inspector appointed to examine certain transactions affecting Telecom Éireann was a leading member of his own party, he will outline the method of appointment of this inspector; whether he is concerned that a political association with the inspector concerned may prejudice, in any way, the report of the inspectors; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The inspector in question was appointed by me on 9 October, 1991, under Section 14 of the Companies Act, 1990, following a process of selection conducted by my Department with the assistance of the Law Society. Up to 20 Solicitors with appropriate commercial experience were suggested by the Law Society; when contacted many of these made known potential conflicts arising from previous or current professional intersets.

I regard the reports referred to by the Deputy as wholly mischievious. I am quite satisfied that the inspector concerned, appointed in a professional capacity in accordance with statute, has been carrying out his functions, and will continue to do so, with complete integrity and professionalism and I have no cause for concern about his report being prejudiced in any way.
