Vol. 420 No. 6

Written Answers. - Cork Computer Company.

Joe Sherlock

Question:

33 Mr. Sherlock asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will outline the results of his contacts with the management of the Apple plant in Cork, following the recent announcement that 400 jobs may be lost as a result of a decision to transfer their printed circuit board operation to Singapore; if he has been informed of any definite decision on the matter by the Apple management; the steps, if any, which are being taken to find replacement jobs should the Apple transfer go ahead; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Apple Computers are currently reviewing their manufacturing strategy with a view to centralising their assembly of Printed Circuit Boards, which is currently distributed worldwide in each of their four manufacturing facilities.

A detailed investigation on a whole range of issues is being undertaken by the company and this is expected to be completed in July. The IDA are working in close conjunction with the Apple team.

I am keeping in close touch with the situation.
