Vol. 420 No. 6

Written Answers. - Petrol Prices.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

45 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the Steps, if any, he proposes to take to ensure that the revenue changes reducing the price of petrol in the 1992 budgets are complied with and passed on to the consumer.

Prior to the revocation, contemporaneously with the commencement of the Competition Act, 1991, of the Restrictive Practices Order and the Maximum Prices Order last autumn, officials of my Department, at my request, met with the oil companies and the SIMI to inform them of my views and expectations in relations to the decontrol of petroleum products prices and competition within the industry. They were warned that controls could be reimposed at will if they did not act competatively and without collusion. A further meeting to review developments with the industry is scheduled to take place in the near future.
