Vol. 420 No. 6

Written Answers. - Tax Refund Payments.

Michael Lowry

Question:

55 Mr. Lowry asked the Minister for Finance the arrangements, if any, he has made to issue payment of tax refunds to qualified persons living outside of the Dublin area who are not directly affected by the postal dispute; and the arrangements, if any, he has made with regard to the issue of tax free allowances certificates to persons in the same areas whose tax affairs are dealt with in the Dublin offices.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the taxpayers referred to in the question are directly affected by the postal dispute in that repayment cheques and tax free allowance certificates for the taxpayers concerned are usually posted from within the Dublin area covered by the postal dispute.

The Revenue Commissioners have not been able to make any special arrangements of the kind referred to by the Deputy. While they regret any inconvenience caused to taxpayers by the present situation, they do not consider that there is any special action, within their control, which would be effective, in the present delicate industrial relations situation, in alleviating the problem.

In accordance with existing facilities any taxpayer may, personally on production of identification or through agents on production of appropriate authorisation, collect repayments due to them from the Office of the Collector-General, Baggot Bridge House, Lower Baggot Street, Dublin 2. Any employer wishing to seek clarification on how to deal with an employee's tax affairs where the absence of a tax free allowance certificate is causing hardship may obtain advice from the tax office concerned.
