Vol. 420 No. 6

Written Answers. - Junior Certificate Student.

Alan M. Dukes

Question:

94 Mr. Dukes asked the Minister for Education if, in the case of a junior certificate student (details supplied) in County Kildare whose literacy problem is sufficient to interfere with his ability to complete written exams, he will accede to a request from the student's parents, school principal and psychologist to have his written work for the junior certificate examined by a person familiar with his disability; if he will give the reason or reasons for his Department's refusal of a previous application for such an appointment; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I wish to assure the Deputy that all requests for special consideration in the certificate examinations are considered sympathetically.

In the particular case referred to by the Deputy, the Department has been in touch with the students parents in the matter. In the light of these discussions, the application for special consideration is being re-examined in my Department.

I will communicate again with the Deputy as soon as possible.
