Vol. 420 No. 9

Written Answers. - CFC Emissions.

John Bruton

Question:

156 Mr. J. Bruton and Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment the average annual emissions per capita of chlorofluorocarbons in Ireland; and whether these emission levels have increased or decreased over the past ten years.

Control measures and related records in relation to CFCs are based on production and consumption rather than emissions to the atmosphere. The latest completed figures indicate that consumption of the main CFCs in Ireland amounted to approximately 2,500 tonnes per annum in 1988.

Figures for subsequent years are being finalised in consultation with the industries concerned. Preliminary indications are that there has been a substantial decrease in the interim.
