Vol. 420 No. 9

Written Answers. - Senior Citizens' Accommodation.

Ivor Callely

Question:

169 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment his views on whether all new developments for senior citizens' accommodation should incorporate a separate bedroom; if he will consider making recommendations to this effect to local authorities approved voluntary housing agencies; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The technical guidelines for accommodation provided by an approved housing body under the scheme of capital assistance allow for flexibility in design and layout to ensure that accommodation is suitable to the needs of the intended occupants. It is a matter for the local authorities who administered the scheme to apply the guidelines as they consider appropriate to the circumstances of individual projects being undertaken in their area. I do not propose to change the guidelines to specify rigid requirements for any particular category of accommodation.
