Vol. 420 No. 9

Written Answers. - Unemployment Assistance.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

198 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Social Welfare if, in relation to the unemployment assistance claim of a person (details supplied) in County Wexford, he will outline the basis for his Department's contention that this claimant enjoys free board and lodgings when in fact he is required to make regular financial contributions to the household in which he resides; if he has satisfied himself, in the light of this fact, that the assessment of means in this case is correct; and if he will make a statment on the matter.

In my reply to Parliamentary Question No. 330 of 28 April I undertook to have the means of the person concerned reviewed further.

The person concerned was interviewed regarding his circumstances and the report thereon was submitted to a deciding officer who has determined that there was no basis for amending the existing means assessment of £25 per week.

It is open to the person concerned to submit further facts or evidence regarding his circumstances to the deciding officer or to lodge an appeal to the independent Social Welfare Appeals Office.
