Vol. 420 No. 9

Written Answers. - Forestry Industry.

Tom Enright

Question:

17 Mr. Enright asked the Minister for Energy if he is concerned about the problems experienced in the forestry industry this year.

I am generally satisfied with the performance of the forestry industry and I expect new records for afforestation to be established again this year of the order of 24,000 hectares.

The international recession in the timber industry however had a negative impact and in particular on Coillte Teoranta's trading situation in 1991. This is continuing to cause difficulties again this year. Despite these difficulties the company managed to return a modest profit in 1991 and I am satisfied that the contingency measures which the company has put in place will allow it to achieve a satisfactory result in 1992.
