Vol. 420 No. 9

Written Answers. - Coal Combustion Technology.

John Bruton

Question:

23 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Energy if the coal combustion technology in use in electricity generators at Moneypoint is a clean technology within the meaning of paragraph 2.6.6 of the Government's submission to the UNCED Conference.

The Government statement to the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) does not relate to the coal combustion technology in use at present in Moneypoint. Paragraph 2.6.6 of the statement refers specifically to additional coal-fired generation capacity and the future development of advanced technologies. Paragraph 2.6.6 recognises the advances currently being made in coal combustion technologies and indicates that further coal-based electricity generation will use one of the commercially proven advanced combustion technologies when they become available.
